Achievements in 2009 and plans for 2010
Sundown in Sundre
The events went well despite cold weather conditions. The turn out at Country Road RV and Sundre Motors was well attended. Country Road RV & Sundre Motors are planning on running the event again next year.
Sundre Municipal Sustainability Plan
The Sundre Sustainability committee is a volunteer committee of various citizens from the town and surrounding area.
Key Points:
Why Sustainability?
Projects on the Horizon:
- Active Farmers Markets
- Community Gardens
- Multi-Generational Parks- outdoor fitness equipment & updated park equipment for children
- Toilet Rebate Program
- Anti-Idling Program
- Bicycle Lanes on Local Roads
- Rain Barrel Incentive
- Events Boards Outside Recreation Facilities
- Research: energy efficiency for all town buildings, vehicles, etc.
- Research: for sustainable policies and bylaws for all town departments
- Paperless billing through the town utility system – which would allow residents to view their bills online
- Development: Build green housing standards
- Town Talent Expertise Inventory
- More Pedestrian Friendly Downtown
- Informative Town website (Easier Communication bet town council and public)
- Sustainability Metrics (Energy Use per person, Water Use per Person, Tons waste per month) Sundre currently rates higher efficient than any other community in the county of Mountain View.
- Events: Example: Sundre Days instead of the River Races
The sustainability group is looking for leadership and support from the Chamber of Commerce. The group would also like to distribute educational information, open the lines of communication, improve signage, support and improve tourism, support recreationaldevelopment, improve community first impressions & support diversity in businesses.
The Sustainability Group created a program called “Pay It Forward”. Pay it Forward challenges businesses to initiate a green act in their business and then pay it forward to another business in the community.
Results so Far:
- September 2009 – Sundre & District Chamber of Commerce received the challenge their act was to fix a leaky tap to conserve water
- October 2009 – Bargain Browser changed thermostat to an automatic timer to control and conserve energy. Now use eco traction (natural ice melter) on their sidewalks during snowy seasons, wash floors with cold water instead of hot, switched to 100% biodegradable customer bags.
- November 2009 – Sobeys Sundre turned off all electronics in the store at closing, encouraged more employees to walk to work, are reusing paper. The outdated product in the bakery and produce sections is given to a local farmer to feed livestock. Now use timers on outside lights to save energy.
- January 2010 – Alberta Treasury Branch increased recycling in their facility to significantly reduce their waste to the landfill
- February 2010 – The Sundre Playschool currently has the challenge. We can’t wait to hear what they decide to do to contribute to the Pay It Forward Challenge!
